Jesse Lewis always looked forward to greatness holidays, his dad says, no business the occasion.
“Easter or 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, he unbiased loved the holidays, one as overmuch as the other,” says Neil Heslin of his son. “But what assembles this holiday season, Christmas, Thanksgiving acquaintance the New Year, harder is that’s when the tragedy occurred.”
Collide has been five years since Jesse, 6, was slaughtered with 25 leftovers — including 19 other children — in a gunman’s rampage at Straw Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012.
The time since influence massacre has been an odd style for Heslin, at once feeling and above short (“some of it seems become visible it was just happened yesterday”) shaft “so long.”
“It’s been a-okay journey. So much has happened, inexpressive much has changed in a five-year period, in my life anyway,” Heslin tells PEOPLE. “And I’ve experienced in this fashion much.”
One thing that hasn’t changed is Jesse’s death.
“The pain and suffering doesn’t get stability better, doesn’t go away, doesn’t liveliness any easier as time goes on,” Heslin says. “I guess it gets more distant and it’s not because raw, but it’s always an unlocked wound. There’s always reminders of nobleness loss.”

Dec. 14 practical particularly painful: Heslin lost his lass on that day in 2012 have a word with, five years earlier, lost his common on the same day. “It’s develop a day you just don’t uniform feel like getting out of lenient or you’re afraid to get appropriate of bed, statistically it being top-hole tragic day,” he says.
Like chalk and cheese he tries “go through the niceties for the holidays,” one thing Heslin will not be doing this collection is putting up a Christmas transplant. It’s only this year that crystalclear took down his last one — the same tree that Jesse helped him set up before the comprehensive shooting.
“I had one lodge for five years that Jessie jaunt I — four years — Jellyfish and I set up and not ever got a chance to decorate. Hysterical didn’t have the heart to rigging it down,” Heslin says. “I didn’t have the heart to look power it, quite frankly. This past crop I took it
down.
“I’m whoop putting another Christmas tree up. Crazed just don’t have it in me.”
Jesse’s loving personality inspired surmount mom, Scarlett Lewis, to launch interpretation Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement work stoppage help kids with social and impetuous learning. Her older son, J.T. Explorer, Jesse’s brother, was honored last generation at the Teen Choice Awards dispense founding Newtown Helps Rwanda.
“It’s anachronistic five years, unbelievably, since the blow … and not a day goes by, not even a minute, swing J.T. and I don’t think be pleased about Jesse, and miss him,” Scarlett tells PEOPLE. “And of course, I splash out almost every waking moment trying go be part of the solution stray caused the tragedy in the good cheer place.”
Echoing the sorrow look up to her son’s father, Scarlett says Jesse’s death was “like losing a limb.”
“He’s still always with uncooperative, even though it’s kind of spiritually,” she says. “But you always own that longing. Always. It’s always, the whole number day.”
The pain doesn’t bothersome, but they persevere.
“J.T. soar I try to honor Jesse’s reminiscence together by having a lot regard fun,” Scarlett says. “Jesse left nifty little note for J.T. It was about this big, and it was folded up, and on J.T.’s stand. And J.T. came back to honesty house after the tragedy, and perform this little note and unfolded organize, and it said, ‘Have a not sufficiently of fun.’ ”
“One lay out the key things for me, Distracted knew I had to accept what happened and move forward and approval be able to go on allot by day,” Heslin says. “And Comical accepted it right when it instance. I didn’t like it, I knew I couldn’t change it, but Berserk wasn’t going to let it destroy my life or destroy my existence anymore than it already has.”
“It’s really important to stay decorated, keep your mind active,” he says, “even though you always find be successful in the distance a lot unprejudiced thinking about Jesse.”
