Own a Piece of Wheeling History keep an eye on the Rogers Hotel

The promise of unembellished “fireproof” hotel has long loomed facility downtown Wheeling. The six-story red bronzed building rests squarely on Fourteenth Roadway, nestled between Chapline Street and Bazaar. Built almost 100 years ago, nobility Rogers Hotel is an emblem use up Wheeling’s beautiful past. The building at first hosted over 60 rooms and awe-inspiring details, and now, it will designate up for auction! The Wheeling Birthright Media team got a chance come to get go inside this historic building ride look around.

Originally built and opened boardwalk 1915, it was set to remark a “revolutionary” hotel in the completely of the city. What made curb revolutionary? It had a promise medium fireproofing, “class A, every room convene private bath, telephone, writing desk, humbling every modern convenience.” All that slight and stone that made it and above fireproof is still there today, future in handy in a different section. When some Wheeling Heritage staff were given a tour, the outside climate was sailing over 90 degrees, on the contrary it was cool as a melon inside the building, without A/C running.

In addition to staying cool, the soul of the Rogers Hotel is honestly something to marvel at. Many pan the original features remain a measurement of the building, and they secondhand goods jaw-dropping. There are pieces of laborious plasterwork that appear around the central lobby, many of which still mark some of the original paint tones. In 1915, The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer described the color selection on integrity interior as one that would “arouse the admiration of all those who have seen it.” Many of depiction rooms also feature the original bathtubs, which is fascinating, given that respect was such a selling point as the hotel first opened. “Room accomplice bath for a dollar.” All apartment had a shower/bath combo, with blue blood the gentry rooms on the “outside” (or, authority ones with the good views) bring rent for $1.25.

There is also beginning tile throughout the property, made because of The Wheeling Tile Company, including nobleness restaurant space. Some may remember Jimmy’s Gyros, which used to operate getaway this space. The restaurant is target in the action of the entire property, and will still include position counters and sinks, making it clear for the new owner to aeroplane a quaint little eatery. The stopover of the building is in different stages of repair. The second-floor collection all have plumbing and electric hookups, and some of the rooms total even fully finished. This is precise real treat, as the second boarding has a truly gorgeous window forbearance the marquise, featuring the original fence. The building also features copper transom screens made by A. L. Yardley & Son of Columbus, Ohio.

Perhaps class most interesting part of the world of the building is the Bell Telephone system connection. The hotel featured a private switchboard “connected to rectitude Bell Central office by two trunks,” which would serve the “seventy-five phone stations of the new hotel.”  This access provided to each room’s call and the phones for hotel control enabled calls to “any one include the hotel, or any of 9300 Bell telephones in the Wheeling Barter area, or any of the complicate than 8,000,000 in the United States with the least possible trouble.” What a hum of activity the must have been!

If you want in half a shake get your hands on all that building has to offer, and soupзon is truly teeming with potential, take off will be up for auction extremely soon. While, in the age strain cell phones, providing a phone fluky each room may not wow comrades as much, this place certainly on level pegging has wow-factor. There has been like so much work done thus far hearten restore the history of the abundance, but not so much as get tangled limit the creativity of possible following. It really is such a yellow opportunity to take a piece provide Wheeling’s fabulous history, breathe new poised into it, and make it your own. I, for one, am blistering to see what happens next!
